What is your Purpose?

Have you ever asked yourself as a Christian; “what is my purpose?”, having heard that being successful is not outclassing others but fulfilling your purpose?

Before we go into that question, let me remind us that we’re called ‘Christians’ because we’re supposed be Christ-like, live like Christ, think like Christ, talk like Christ and so on. When we believe in God and accept Him as our Lord and Saviour, we become dead to flesh and the things of the flesh and then, we receive His Spirit and become alive; in the spirit. It is no longer Chisom in control but Christ.

The real life of a person is in the spirit, so life is spiritual. We should focus and deal more with things of the spiritual than physical. The body is just housing the spirit and it does only what is conceived in the mind. So if I’m in Christ, my spirit (my life) is Christ. He is the one now in control of me.

Where am I headed?

Christ came to this world to die for us and He set an example, a guideline for us live right. You shouldn’t be bothered about how to live right when you have Christ. And since we have a guideline already, we can focus and live like the example He has set for us. Following this guideline, His purpose should be our purpose.

[Galatians 2:20] “I have been crucified with Christ; it’s no longer I who lives but Christ that lives in me. The life I now live, I live in Faith in the Son of God, who loves me and gave Himself for me”

Since real life is in the spirit and the Spirit living in us is Christ, I would like to change that question.

What was Christ’s purpose on earth?

Jesus Christ came to reconcile men back to God.

Your purpose on earth as a Christian is to reconcile people back to God.

There have been lots of misunderstandings about this. You feel you can act, so your purpose is to act or to help others get out of their mess or to sing or whatever, so feel that once you’re engaged in any of these, you’re successful, fulfilling the purpose for which you were made. Let’s not confuse purpose with talents and gifts. I am fond of calling these gifts methods, in the sense that, God gave us gifts to achieve purpose, so these gifts are methods to achieving purpose. Our gifts should be used to reconcile people back to God. Imagine using these gifts without achieving purpose, it would be useless after all.

When Jesus was on earth, He was into a lot of ministries: healing, working of miracles, preaching, teaching, missions and so on. Imagine if after doing all those, he didn’t die on the cross, would reconciliation have been achieved? He would have lived a life without purpose. The same applies to us, in whatever field we are in, our focus should be reconciliation. Jesus could have been an influential musician, but that wasn’t the important part. The important part was His death on the cross.

You can sing, write, act, give and help others? Let all these gifts be channeled into reconciliation. There’s hardly any gift without influence, use that influence to win souls for God. You’re an entrepreneur, you have a good mind for business and you sure will have a lot of customers. Be deliberate about it and use that gift to win souls. You’re into politics or anything; let your mind be towards reconciliation. Whatever gift God has given you, use it to win souls.

And of course, you have to be deliberate about it.
